I Lost Christmas!

Christmas of 2008- Horses in the Snow
It's true, I lost Christmas this year. On my son's birthday, December 18, I got bucked off my sweet Black Elk. He bucked?? I know this is not normal Black Elk behavior.. Maybe he was feeling frisky, maybe my foot hitting the barrel we were going around scared him..maybe.. well, I have had lots of time to speculate. I broke 5 ribs on the left side. Ohhh.. not fun!  I don't really know what happened those precious seconds prior to hitting the ground, but I knew I hurt. I was lucky that Ken was home, when I gathered my breath, I gave a big holler.. and a few minutes later he came out to help me into the house.

By the time I was on the porch,  I was begging for pain pills. This is 'miss natural', natural childbirth, organic foods, never take pain pills.. well I was begging for them!  He cut off my sweatshirt, and got me on the couch and there I stay for the next week. I couldn' t even eat! He canceled the family Christmas party, my cooking dates with my grandchildren, putting up the Christmas tree.. Of course, I couldn't of enjoyed any of it.. but how do you recapture Christmas??

It will be 5 weeks tomorrow since I got bucked off. I am still quite friendly with the couch, but up a good part of the day, and can finally sleep in the bed again. I am taking mile long walks and today started some floor exercises. I am healing..

There have been some wonderful perks.. Ken has been doing the cooking and after weeks of venison stew, he got bored and now has gotten quite creative. Last night we had scallops seared in butter with salmon caviar over steamed rice with sour cream. WOW!! That was amazing! Friends and neighbors have come to visit. Our family doctor, David Russell called every day that first week to check on me, and his wife, Shelly sent me flowers.  My neighbor to the east and her two children have come to visit the horses and have tea with me almost daily. My dear friend Yvonne came and taught me to knit, Janet brought chocolates, my son came numerous times bringing me home made chocolate chip cookies and a big stack of movies, visiting for hours. And it was with my son and daughter in law that I spent Christmas day, just visiting..

I called friends and family back east, and had all the time in the world to catch up. I heard lots of broken rib stories. In fact my brother broke his ribs on black ice and the next day flew from NJ to Kansas to go deer hunting. The next morning after climbing  a tree he began to wonder how he would ever get down. He spent the rest of that day laying in the back of a truck in 20 degree weather. He is much tougher than me!!

Ken-My Snow Angel!

I am counting my blessings for I have been loved and cared for tenderly these weeks of healing, Ken says that a few broken ribs are just the price I  pay for having an adventurous life. I think he's right.

P.S. These pictures are from last year.. this year along with the ribs..my camera broke!
